Residents in the Ariana and La Marsa districts have increased their use of unmarked trails by 28 percent since early 2025 according to records kept by the Tunisian Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The shift comes as more people seek outdoor routines that avoid crowded tourist zones near the medina and Carthage ruins during peak summer months. Local wellness programs report higher turnout for early-morning sessions because temperatures stay lower before 8 a.m. and humidity remains manageable along shaded paths.
One stretch runs behind the Bardo Museum gardens along unpaved tracks that follow the edge of the former royal estate. Another set of routes starts near the Parc de la Rose in Ariana and winds through eucalyptus stands toward the Oued Meliane riverbed. Both areas sit within a 15-minute bus ride from central Tunis on lines 3 and 20 yet receive few foreign visitors.
The Tunis Outdoor Fitness Club has run free group walks every Tuesday and Thursday since March 2024 from the Ariana municipal stadium entrance. Participants meet at 6:45 a.m. and cover roughly four kilometres before returning for basic stretching. A separate initiative by the Ariana Youth Centre offers Saturday sessions that include light resistance exercises using tree branches and park benches. These programs charge no fee beyond optional transport contributions of two dinars.
Daily counts at the Ariana trailhead reached 340 users on weekdays last month, up from 210 the same period in 2023. The rise tracks with a national health campaign that distributed 50,000 step-tracking leaflets through pharmacies in March.
Walkers reach the Bardo extension by exiting bus line 3 at the museum stop and following the eastern fence line for 200 metres until a dirt track appears on the right. The Ariana riverbed path begins at the rear gate of Parc de la Rose, marked only by a small metal sign installed by the youth centre last year. Both routes stay under tree cover for most of their length and end near public fountains for water refills.
Locals recommend carrying at least one litre of water and wearing light colours. Those new to the paths can join the Tuesday club session for an introduction before exploring alone. The ministry advises checking the daily UV index posted at Ariana stadium before heading out.
